Sepultura was formed by Brazilian brothers Max and Igor Cavalera in 1984. They released their first album in 1986 called Morbid Visions which contained the classic Troops Of Doom song. They went on to record three more albums before releasing Chaos A.D. Chaos A.D showed a new style of Sepultura showing influences of industrial and hardcore music. Chaos A.D became a huge hit and sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S (numbers are from 2000). Max Cavalera left the band in 1997 and was replaced by Derrick Green who is still the vocalist for Sepultura.
The Album: Chaos A.D contains 14 songs and is a slower album than their earlier works. The album shows a new side of Sepultura incorporating many different elements. The theme of the album is in typical Sepultura style. The lyrics revolve around political injustice and censorship. The album also contains classic songs like Refuse/Resist, Propaganda and Territory. The album also contains a song written by Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) called Biotech is Godzilla which Max Cavalera referred to as “pure hardcore”. The album also incorporates many South American and African elements into the song, for example on the song Refuse/Resist the song starts out with Afro-Brazilian drumming. Chaos A.D also contains the bands first all-acoustic song called Kaiowas and is the last track on the album. The album was met by positive reviews, scoring 4.5/5 on AllMusic. Sepultura is a kick ass band and this is a great album. My favorite song is Refuse/Resist, great vibe to it, great guitar work, heavy and it’s definitely a Sepultura song.
