At The Gates are one of the pioneers of the “Gothenburg Sound” together with In Flames & Dark Tranquillity and was founded back in 1990. At The Gates consisted of vocalist Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, guitarists Anders Björler and Martin Larsson, bassist Jonas Björler (Brother of Anders) and drummer Adrian Erlandsson. The group was active between 1990 and 1996. They have however, re-united, but only play shows, they will not record any new material. At The Gates are also considered one of the pioneers of the metalcore genre, influencing many, many, metalcore bands for example - Bring Me The Horizon, if you listen to Bring Me The Horizon’s first album, Count Your Blessings, you can clearly hear they’re heavily influenced by At The Gates. Needless to say, during their short time as a band, At The Gates certainly left a big mark. During their reunion tour they headlined the Wacken festival playing in front of thousands of people. They also released a DVD with footage from the Wacken show.
Cold is one of the most famous songs off the Slaughter of The Soul album. The song has a great intro and after about 30 seconds the song takes off! The song is flat out awesome, the guitars, the vocals, the drums, the bass… everything is top notch. Andy LaRocque (King Diamond) makes a guest appearence on this track - the solo at 01:55 is the work of Andy LaRocque. Every “metalhead” should have heard at least one At The Gates track. They are truly one of the biggest pioneers of the metalcore scene and metal all together. Check them out! If you like it, don’t forget to check out my review on the Slaughter of the Soul album!
