Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies (Album)
Suicidal Tendencies released their self-titled album in 1983 and was, at the time, one of the best-selling punk albums. Suicidal Tendencies would later on become famous for their crossover-style, combining hardcore punk with thrash metal. Their debut album was really successful and a big part of that success was because of their song Institutionalized which to date, still is their most famous song. Institutionalized was the first hardcore/punk track to receive significant airplay on MTV. Suicidal Tendencies are still active and have released eleven albums so far. The band has gone through multiple lineup changes and Wikipedia lists over 25 former band members, including Metallica’s Robert Trujillo.
The Album: Suicidal Tendencies is a true hardcore punk album, with aggressive lyrics and a fast paced rhythm. The lyrics cover themes like politics (I Shot The Devil, Two Sided Politics, Memories of Tomorrow) and self-depression (Institutionalized, Possessed). Most of the lyrics contain a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor. A great example of this is the track Institutionalized. Mike Muir has a great hardcore/punk voice and is the soul of Suicidal Tendencies. His lyrics contain a lot of humour but with a serious touch to it. The album is a tad too short sadly and it’s only 27 minutes long. But it’s one of the best debut albums and really made a name for Suicidal Tendencies both in the hardcore/punk scene but also in the commercial scene. The song Institutionalized was featured in a Miami Vice episode; this just shows how successful the album really was. If I’d have to pick a favorite song it’d be Suicide’s An Alternative/You’ll Be Sorry for sure. This song great lyrical work, fast and aggressive, while having a humorous side to it.
